Deadgirl - Review - @BrandonCSites / #Horror

Deadgirl (2008) **
D: Marcel Sarmiento, Gadi Harel
C: Shiloh Fernandez, Noah Segan, Michael Bowen, Candice Accola
P: High school misfits, skipping school for the day, break into an abandoned mental hospital only to discover a naked woman bound and gagged to an operating table that turns out to be a zombie. Things get complicated when they decide to use said zombie as their own personal sex slave.

Controversial, much talked about film feels more like an experimental film project rather then a feature length film. Maybe that’s because the material was better suited to a short then being stretched out to over a hundred minutes.

Sure, it’s bold. There are some interesting ideas and the material is bound to get people going, but that’s not enough to carry an entire movie. To pad out the film’s running time, coming of age story elements are introduced, but the characterizations and scenarios feel stereotypical and clich├ęd.

The people behind Deadgirl have a voice and they have something to say. They just don’t know how to bring it together in a narrative feature. Still, any film that takes a risk, even if it misses the mark, as is the case with Deadgirl, deserves to be commended for doing so. [R] 101 mins.
