Evil Dead (2013) - Review - @BrandonCSites / #Horror

Evil Dead (2013) *
D: Fede Alvarez
C: Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Lou Taylor Pucci, Jessica Lucas, Elizabeth Blackmore
P: Remake of the Sam Raimi classic about five teenagers who head to a remote cabin for the weekend, only to become demonically possessed one by one after one of them unwittingly unleashes evil spirits.

Part of the objective of a remake is to retain the spirit or essence of the original while updating the story. With that in mind, Evil Dead is yet another pointless remake in an era of pointless remakes. Evil Dead’s objective is to throw as many buckets of gore at the screen in an effort to try to camouflage the overall weakness of the script and the flimsiness of the characterizations. Gone are the sense of dread and the anticipation of horror. Gone is the maniac camera work of the original. Gone is the piercing use of sound. Gone is the humor. All that’s left is a film that wallow’s in gore, violence & excess, but it does so without any originality or gusto. Evil Dead is the kind of film that doesn't have a voice or anything in particular to say. [R] 91 mins.
