I Spit on Your Grave (2010) - Review - @BrandonCSites

I Spit on Your Grave (2010) *
D: Steven R. Monroe
C: Sarah Butler, Chad Lindberg, Tracey Walter, Daniel Franzese, Jeff Branson, Andrew Howard, Rodney Eastman, Saxon Sharbino, Mollie Milligan
Plot Synopsis: A young author (Butler) heads out to a remote cabin to work on her latest novel, but is instead greeted by a group of small town thugs who repeatedly rape her and then try to kill her in an effort to cover up their crime. However, she manages to escape. One month later, she returns to execute her revenge employing methods that recall exactly what they did to her.

Review: Sure, the violence and rape sequences of the I Spit on Your Grave remake are downright offensive, but there's other ways to offend an audience member. The contempt that this remake has for women is offensive. The film's take on retarded characters is offensive. The portrayal of small town living and the faces that populate these areas is offensive. The overall simplification of logic is offensive. The way that this film has a condescending tone towards its audience is offensive. The way that this remake makes the audience an additional participant to a woman who is raped repeatedly is offensive. Just about everything about this remake is offensive.

The original I Spit On Your Grave was offensive, but it was so horribly made and so wretchedly acted, that it helped to counteract some of the film's offensiveness and made it a bit unintentionally funny at times. The offensiveness of this remake has been amped up to an entirely different level, because the film is competently made, features a cast that isn't half bad and and the director is certainly capable of turning in decent genre efforts. It shows that all of these people hoped aboard this film purely for commercial reasons even though they know the material is garbage and that there was no real reason why the 1978 version needed to be remade. That, in of itself, is what's most offensive of all about this remake.

Surely people know going into a film called I Spit on Your Grave that it’s worthless and that there are so many other films out their that deserve our attention, but yet here you are reading a review for the film, because in its attempts to be as offensive as possible and to make a quick buck, it has piqued your curiosity in some way. [Not Rated] 107 mins.
