Scream of the Banshee - Review - @BrandonCSites / #AfterDarkFilms

Scream of the Banshee (2011) **
D: Steven C. Miller
C: Lauren Holly, Lance Henriksen, Marcelle Baer, Todd Haberkorn, Leanne Cochran, Garrett Hines
P: A group of college kids and their professor accidentally unleash an ancient monster that places a death curse on whoever hears it scream.

Scream of the Banshee provides an adequate amount of thrills, chills and suspense. It's competently directed. It's competently acted by everyone involved. It's got a competent array of special effects and makeup. It also happens to look slick and polished. It's a solid horror film in every respect. So what's there to complain about?

Well, it never pushes the envelope far enough. It doesn't break out of the box so to speak. It has an interesting concept at its disposal. There was so much mythology or ideology that the film could have explored, but it goes in the more routine direction of teen slasher, but with an ancient creature replacing the madman. Scream of the Banshee is routine and predictable when it didn't have to be. Scream of the Banshee is one of those films in which there is all this potential, but instead the film rests on average, instead of striving to be the stand out genre film it could have been. [R] 90 mins.
