Piranha Part Two: The Spawning (1981) *
D: James Cameron
C: Tricia O'Neal, Steve Marachuk, Lance Henriksen, Ricky G. Paul
Plot Synopsis: A group of vacationers, at a Club Med type resort, are lunch meat for a school of over sized piranha that have wings and can fly.
Review: Piranha 2 takes place at a Club Med type resort with flying piranha. Do I really need to say anything else?!?
With its premise, cheap looking special effects, dated fashions and a very 80's setting, I'm surprised that they took a fairly straight forward approach to the material. Did they not have the hindsight to see just how ridiculous the material was?
There were so many things that they could've done to exploit the ridiculousness of this whole enterprise such as making the dialogue cringe worthy, tossing aside any iota of character logic or motivation. They could've had the cast do the stupidest possible things at the stupidest possible times or, at the least, have the flying piranha engage in absurd antics. None of this ever happens and, as such, Piranha 2 feels flat & lifeless.
This could've been an infamously bad movie along the lines of Troll 2, Mommie Dearest or even Showgirls. Those films were truly awful, but they weren't afraid to camp it up. If you're going to make an awful film, make it as awful as possible. As a result, they transcended their badness and became quite entertaining. Piranha 2, on the other hand, tries to shy away from its awfulness. It's bad, but in a boring way. [R] 95 mins.
