Contracted: Phase II (2015) **
D: Josh Forbes
C: Matt Mercer, Marianna Palka, Morgan Peter Brown, Anna Lore, Peter Cilella, Laurel Vail, John Ennis, Najarra Townsend
Plot Synopsis: A sexually transmitted virus is ravaging LA and turning lovers into flesh-eating zombies and one man is in a race against time to stop it.
Review: In some ways, Contracted: Phase II is an improvement over the original and in a lot of ways, it's another pointless sequel. It starts out with one of the characters from the original being affected with the zombie like STD that affected the heroine of the first film.
We watch as this character starts to slowly rot away. Some of these scenes have a squirm inducing quality, but it isn't anything that we haven't seen in the original other then the genders of the characters are now reversed. It's not a female who's having to go through this ordeal, but now it's a guy. The first half is pretty much a remake and an unnecessary one at that. To its credit, Phase II makes it points about STD's quicker and doesn't subject viewers to repetitious scenes of characters rotting away like the original.
The second half switches gears to focus on how the virus is spreading and the hunt for patient zero. Again, this isn't anything that we haven't seen in other horror films with an action edge. However, at least these scenes are executed with energy & momentum. Or, to put it more simply, the pacing never allowed for my interest to waiver.
Phase II is leaner, trimmer and more to the point, but it recycles material without adding anything new to the mix. Horror fans have been desperately looking for something original or at least creative. Phase II gives us more of the same. [Not Rated] 79 minutes.
