Review: The idea behind a sequel is to expand upon themes or story elements present in the previous entries in a series. However, most writers, directors & producers are guilty of simply remaking the original film, but with a slight variation to give it some point of differentiation. That's why so many critics despise sequels, because they're the exact same movie recycled with the express intent of cashing in on the popularity of a financially successful project. In most cases, they tarnish the memory of the original. The Final Chapter is no exception to that train of thought with the only variation being that Jason is supposedly killed at the end, but we all know how that turned out.
Without the title moniker or Jason Voorhees' as the killer, this would've been another undistinguished slasher about teenagers getting disposed of by a masked killer. There's nothing new or inspired about any of this, but the pacing rarely lags. It's never boring. The gore effects, while there's nothing particularly creative on display, are well realized. The cast has a bit more personality then usual, but there's nothing all that memorable about the characters either. The climatic showdown is effective, but it doesn't cover any new ground.
The Final Chapter is certainly watchable and a technically proficient example of a slasher movie, but it never raises above anything more then that. [R] 91 minutes.
